Our club held it's first ever outing, "Sac-A-Yak", on Saturday at Cotile Lake. The objective was Sacalait, aka, crappie, white perch. Six of us braved 32 degree temps - Harold Griffith, James Lewis, Richard Dewees, Morris Houck, Lindsey Torbett, and myself. We started deep jigging and trolling the stump fields in 15-25 fow, but only a couple bites and Morris, James and I decided to work the shallow areas in search of anything that would bite.
I threw a spinnerbait about a dozen times in one promising area without a hit. Then I got a bump twice and figured it was a bream. Why not play with the "gobbules" for awhile, right? I made a cast with the fly rod using a Gray Ghost. It hardly went five feet due to a tangle. When I got the tangle undone, and lifted the rod, I felt a hangup. Except the hangup started moving. The bass wrapped me around a log, and when I got the line free, the bass came out the water and it was BIG! Unfortunately it threw the hook.
I decided to stay with the Gray Ghost and it paid off. Hooked 3 more bass and landed them, but none as big. The fish were holding the bottom in 3-7 fow. I also managed to land a 17-inch grass pike (aka, chain pickeral) without it cutting me off. The pike were active, and I ended up hooking 3 more - each one cut my line and stole my precious Gray Ghost. I started the day with 3 of those, and lost all 3 to grass pike!
James was in the vicinity and I saw him bring a couple to his yak. Check out the nice bass he caught on his post.
The only one who caught a crappie was Morris. No reason why the crappie / sacalait / white perch were not biting, but seems like everything else was.
It was a great morning on the water. It warmed up nice and the wind was calm. Most important, fishing with a group of like-minded yak maniacs was fun. After we pulled out, we did lunch at Lakeside Diner and shared stories and solved some of the world's problems.
